Since 2002, Virginia has issued almost $2 Billion land preservation tax credits in 26%+ of the Commonwealth. Virginia is one of 14 U.S. states that offers tax credit incentives in exchange for perpetual land conveyance to public and private nonprofit organizations. Once donated, the allowed land uses include:
• Conservation preservation
• Agricultural and forestal use
• Open space and watershed preservation
• Natural resource and biodiversity conservation and/or
• Historic preservation
This GIS presentation will explore the quantitative effects of the Virginia Land Conservation Incentives Act to conservation areas in Virginia, their relationship to fair market values of surrounding properties, and their local fiscal impact.
